Description
On my first visit to Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge near Valentine, Nebraska I didn’t have any expectations. I was driving along enjoying the scenic terrain and noticed something crossing the road about a half mile ahead. It was this herd of young elk. They were casually running, and by casually running, I mean that they were not running hard like they were being chased, yet they weren’t walking.
The sun was behind me providing wonderful afternoon light on the herd. I eased up in my vehicle and stopped, even though there was still 300 plus feet between us.
The herd had stopped and as seen in this photograph they are facing a ridge that drops down to a lower elevation. I knew once they started moving that I would only have a few seconds before they disappeared.
I really like the tones in this photograph, the elk have dark and light brown fur with their characteristic buff colored rump, blending nicely with the light yellow dried grass to the green pine trees in the distance.
Titled “Young Elk” simply because all of the elk in the photograph are young. There isn’t a big bull elk that would make a great trophy with his larger-than-life antler rack, but in a few years, they might change.
