Description
While visiting Yellowthroat Wildlife Management Area, about 12 miles south of Ainsworth, Nebraska, I came across a small group of Sharp-tailed Grouse. All of them were hens and they were seeking something to eat in some tall prairie grass. Keeping my distance, they seemed to tolerate me being there. They were gradually moving across the land, seeking food. I would adjust my distance as they moved away, always keeping enough distance not to scare them, yet also in range of my telephoto lens.
After a half hour, they had moved to a barbed wire fence that separates the public land from the private land. On the private land was a hay field that still had some rolled bales of hay from a recent hay cutting. It was at this point where I must have presented some kind of threat to them. This particular hen raised her crest and ruffled some tail feathers to alert the other hens of an impending danger. Then she flew up and positioned herself on the rolled bale of hay, still showing her raised crest feathers. Almost as if she was posing for me, she remained on the bale of hay for another ten minutes or so.
