Description
If you ask a guy what his favorite color is, there’s a good chance he’ll say it’s Camo, short for Camouflage. Could be the same response if asked the Common Nighthawk.
An elaborate pattern of gray, brown, black and white feathers helps the Nighthawk to blend into many every day environments.
The Common Nighthawk hunts at night for flying insects, and sleeps some during the daytime hours.
On the day of this photograph, it was around 6:00 PM (June 2019) and I was driving a one-lane dirt road that leads to Yellowthroat Wildlife Management Area about 13 miles south of Ainsworth, Nebraska and I spotted him atop the fence post off to my left.
I simply turned my wheels to the right to give me a better angle from my vehicle window. I had already mounted my camera to a bean bag window support device. After taking several photographs I switched to Video Mode and was gathering some good footage. The wind was blowing and naturally, the Nighthawk had positioned himself directly into the wind and doing some nice windsurfing. After a couple of minutes into the video, I saw the Nighthawk open his eyes and started making some vocal sounds. I guess I was kind of lost in my own little world and didn’t realize a vehicle was coming up behind me. Since I had basically pulled over to the right side of the one-lane road and the other vehicle pulled up and stopped to see if I had problems.
This photograph is available with and without a border and both can be found in my gallery titled The Bird Collection.
