Description
The young woman traveler is aboard the UP 3977 steam locomotive and has stepped on the deck between the tender and the first passenger car. An aspiring young photographer has struck up a conversation and talks her into striking a pose with the rivets of the tender on each side of her.
The Union Pacific UP 3977 is one of two remaining Challenger steam locomotives. At one time, Union Pacific Railroad owned 105 of the huge locomotives. The Challengers had a wheel arrangement of 4-6-6-4, measures almost 122 feet in length, weighs more than a million pounds, and articulated. The UP 3977 is on display in North Platte, Nebraska while the UP 3985 is still being used for excursion services, and is based out of Cheyenne, Wyoming.
