Description
What a sight to see, the Sandhill Crane Spring Migration. From the middle of February through the middle of March, over 500,000 Sandhill Cranes will make a month long stopover on a stretch of approximately 150 miles of the Platte River between North Platte and Grand Island Nebraska.
The cranes are making their way from their winter grounds in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and parts of Mexico, to their breeding grounds in Canada, Alaska and Siberia.
During their stopover, the Sandhill Cranes roost on sandbars in the Platte River, then every morning just after sunrise, they take flight to neighboring harvested cornfields, feeding on leftover kernels of corn as well as invertebrates.
Sandhill Cranes Fly By Deere was made at a cornfield just west of North Platte, Nebraska. In this photograph, the Sandhill Cranes are not bothered by the farmer and his tractor in the background. In the far background is Union Pacific's Bailey Yard, one can see several locomotives.
This photograph has had an artistic filter applied to give it qualities unique to the art of painting.
