Description
The living legend for Union Pacific Railroad is the UP 844, a steam locomotive seen here at Railfest 2012 in Bailey Yard, North Platte, Nebraska. The two (2) friends are the UP 7964 and the UP 1996 in the background.
The UP 7964 is the 5,000th locomotive manufactured by General Electric Transportation in their Evolution Series.
The UP 1996 is one of the Heritage Fleet locomotives painted in Southern Pacific colors in honor of Union Pacific acquiring Southern Pacific in 1996.
Built in 1944, UP 844 was the last steam locomotive delivered to Union Pacific and is the only steam locomotive never to be retired by a North American Class I railroad.
The UP 844 has a wheel configuration of 4-8-4, the drivers have a diameter of 80". This photograph shows the gyrating Mars light just above the headlamp. In 2013, the Mars light was removed due to the mounting bolts failing.
UP 844 is used by Union Pacific for Excursion Service and logs thousands of miles each year.
