Description
Union Pacific's UP 844 has just departed North Platte, Nebraska and is eastbound moving at track speed. I had positioned myself on an overpass at Brady, Nebraska to capture the fast moving steam locomotive from this perspective.
Built in 1944, it was the last steam locomotive delivered to Union Pacific and is the only steam locomotive never to be retired by a North American Class I railroad.
The UP 844 has a wheel configuration of 4-8-4, the drivers have a diameter of 80". This photograph shows the gyrating Mars light just above the headlamp. In 2013, the Mars light was removed due to the mounting bolts failing.
UP 844 is used by Union Pacific for Excursion Service and logs thousands of miles each year.
This photograph has been processed in black-and-white and is also available in color, see my gallery titled Railroad.
