Description
UP 3428, an SD40-2 EMD 3,000 HP diesel-electric locomotive, built in the mid '70s became the best selling locomotive for EMD (Electro-Motive Division). The UP 3428 is still being used today, working in Union Pacific's Bailey Yard in North Platte, Nebraska.
Today, UP 3428 has been equipped with RCL (Remote Control Locomotive) equipment and is used in the yard sorting railroad cars among other duties.
The RCL locomotives have two (2) amber flashing strobes located on the roof of the cab, these strobes, when flashing, indicate that the locomotive is in Remote Control mode. A Remote Control Operator is a person equipped with a chest mounted control device so that he/she can operate the locomotive without physically being in the cab. Remote Control Locomotives were first used in the railroad industry back in the 1980s and have proven to be safe and efficient.
