Description
"Just A Minute!" We've all heard and/or used that phrase at some time in our lives.
On the night of September 27, 2015 we experienced a lunar eclipse and a super moon - making it a super moon lunar eclipse. Lunar eclipses only happen a couple of times a year, and they can be partial lunar eclipse or a total lunar eclipse, but for everything to be in alignment for a super moon and a lunar eclipse, well, that is rare. According to the experts, 2033 will be the next time we can witness a super moon lunar eclipse. Super moon is a term given to a full moon or new moon that occurs when the orbit of the moon is closest to earth, making it appear about 14% larger than a regular full or new moon.
A lunar eclipse is when the earth is between the sun and the moon which puts the moon in the earth's shadow. Pretty neat to watch in person.
I made this photograph using five (5) exposures taken exactly one minute apart, then blending them together in the post-processing. I was using my 400mm prime lens and when viewed through that powerful lens, it is that size in relation to the frame (sensor). In other words, I didn't crop the frame to make the moon appear larger.
With my camera on my tripod, and using the timer function of my CamRanger, which was set to exactly 60 seconds. The first exposure was the lower left, then the one just above it was one minute later, and so on for the duration of four (4) minutes. Notice how the size of the moon in the first exposure (lower left) is larger than the others? Also notice how in each exposure the moon appears to be progressively smaller? That is the way it was, and I'm sure it is due to the orbit of the moon and how it is moving away from the earth. In other words, nothing was altered in PhotoShop in relation to the sizes of the moon.
In addition, another point to consider is that when I captured this sequence of photographs, the position of the moon was relatively low in the sky, probably about 15-degrees above the horizon. What I’m trying to say is that if the moon would have been higher in the sky, the difference between each frame would not be as much, nor would the difference in the size of the moon be as much.
So what we are seeing is the result of the earth's movement and the moon rotation and how far "one minute" makes a difference.
As I said above, nothing was altered in software when making this artwork. I would like to add that I made an artistic decision to remove the stars in the background area, to me it makes a more appealing work-of-art.
Hopefully, the next time you hear or speak "Just A Minute!", you will reflect back to this photograph and smile.
These were captured near Sutherland, Nebraska between the times of 10:14 PM through 10:18 PM CDT, September 27, 2015.
An artistic effect has been added to give a feel of texture and dimension, and featured in "The Slat Collection" by Bill Kesler Photography.
