Description
Along the south banks of Lake Ogallala are several large cottonwood trees, and each tree has dozens of large nests constructed from small branches. These are the nests of the Great Blue Heron. In this photograph there are six (6) Great Blue Herons - or three (3) mating pairs.
Lake Ogallala is located about eight (8) miles north of Ogallala, Nebraska. The North Platte River feeds into Lake McConaughy which has a dam and generating station. Once the water is released from Lake McConaughy it becomes Lake Ogallala. Off to the east, the water is released from Lake Ogallala into the North Platte River. All this water provides a great feeding resource for the Great Blue Herons.
