Description
Natural illumination from a full moon allows this long exposure to bring out the details in the chalk formations at Monument Rocks. I took sixty-seven (67) long exposures and stacked them in the post-processing to form the star trails. I processed this in black-and-white and really like the "feel" of it. This photograph is also available in color in my gallery titled Astrophotography.
People say Kansas is flat. No argument here. Monument Rocks has been named one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas and again, no argument here. Monument Rocks was the first named U.S. National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior back in 1968. Also known as Chalk Pyramids, these unique formations reach a height of 70 ft. and include such formations as buttes and arches. Rich in fossils, they were formed an estimated 80 million years ago.
This U.S. National Natural Landmark is accessible via a dirt road and is about 7 miles off U.S. Hwy 83 about 20 miles south of Oakley, Kansas. You cannot see the pyramids from the highway, and in my opinion, it is well worth the trip via the dirt road. I have had the pleasure to visit multiple times since 1986 and never have I found the dirt road to be in bad shape.
I love to show people these photographs and ask if they know where this was taken. They are shocked to hear that it is our very own Kansas.
